This note is from the 1998 series which created riots in Port Louis after their release on the 18th of October 1998. There was widespread protests from the Tamil community when the new banknotes appeared due to the language order change on the notes. There have always been three languages printed on the banknotes in Mauritius, English, Tamil and Hindi, and always in that order. The banks explanation was that the lower two languages were reversed because on the smaller 25 rupee the Tamil text in that position would have encroached on the portrait of Sir Ah-Chuen. The Tamil community rejected the explanation and insisted the language order be placed back to its traditional position above the Hindi text. Its interesting to note that the Tamil community on Mauritius represents only 10% of the population, while the Hindi community represents 40%. These notes were withdrawn from circulation very quickly and replaced less than 6 months later with the 1999 dated series which had the language order corrected to the traditional language order.
The higher denomination notes of this series are particularly difficult especially the 1000 and 2000 rupee notes.
